A history of the Antonine Wall and a guide to the surviving remains of Rome’s Northernmost Frontier

Distance Slabs

Measurements

Two different measurements are recorded on the distance slabs - paces (1.4795 metres) and feet (0.2959 metres). Those slabs found to the east of Castlehill use the former and reflected the first phase of construction. Those to the west however used the shorter measurement which has been interpreted as construction on the Wall resuming after a significant delay.

Some of the most impressive archaeological finds on the Antonine Wall have been the distance slabs. These ornate engravings were made by the Legions to record their achievement at building various lengths of Wall. There are believed to be many still waiting to be discovered but a significant number can be found in the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.
