Distance Slabs

Some of the most impressive archaeological finds on the Antonine Wall have been the distance slabs. These ornate engravings were made by the Legions to record their achievement at building sections of Wall. There are believed to be many still waiting to be discovered but a significant number can be found in the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow.

Measurements

Two different measurements are recorded on the distance slabs - paces (1.4795 metres) and feet (0.2959 metres). Those slabs found to the east of Castlehill use the former and reflected the first phase of construction. Those to the west used the shorter measurement and historians believe this change occurred as due to a significant delay in construction in this portion of the wall.
